Our beloved father, Dr. Joseph Anthony Jerkins of Columbus, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord after a brief illness with his daughters by his side on Friday, March 26, 2021, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH.
Dr. Joseph Anthony Jerkins was born July 13, 1954, in Vineland, New Jersey, to Fred and Gladys Jerkins and grew up in Newtonville, New Jersey. Through hard work, faith in God, and the love of learning, he attained great success obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Biology, (University of Toledo), Nuclear Medical Technologist Certification (The Ohio State University), RPh (The Ohio State University), Pharm.D (The Ohio State University), BSN (Chamberlain University), RN licensure and was slated to graduate from his MSN/FNP program (Chamberlain University), December 2021.
Dr. Jerkins was a true visionary embodying the entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating six pharmacies (20+ years), medical practice, and other businesses throughout his life. Dr. Jerkins believed, “I was put on this earth to help people,” which he did with his heart for providing healthcare to the underserved, indigent, and marginalized communities. Dr. Jerkins donated resources, time, and energy to the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, Rahab’s Rope, Destiny’s Village in Haiti, and those struggling with addiction.
Dr. Jerkins’s hobbies included laughing with family and friends, playing the piano, the guitar, learning/speaking Spanish, astronomy, and inventing devices to improve pharmacy practice called the pharmakiosk.
Dr. Jerkins was preceded in death by his parents Gladys Wiggins and Fred Andrew Jerkins Sr; his sisters Odessa Ann Jerkins-Harris, Etha Jerkins-Agyei, brother Dr. David Jerkins, granddaughter Johanna B. Czok, nephews Joseph Jerkins and Samuel Jerkins, his son-in-law Ajamu Karega and his first wife Joann L. Potts.
Dr. Jerkins leaves to mourn his four daughters Dianna L. Jerkins-Karega, Evon G. Czok (Michael), Jozette T. Blackshear (Louis), and Carmen F. Jerkins, his third wife, Vivian Moore, his second wife Luzviminda Calo, sister Darlene Glover (George), brothers Curtis Jerkins (Marva), Lee Jerkins (Geraldine), Sam Jerkins (Mary), Fred Jerkins (Sylvia), Daniel Jerkins (Karla), George Jerkins (Beatrix), Paul Jerkins (Kathy), Charles Jerkins (Michelle). Grandchildren Tyo’ J. Jerkins-Karega, Ayo’ PL. Jerkins-Karega, Eva A. Jerkins, Louis A. Blackshear V (Ronnisha), Uzenzile E. Jerkins-Karega (Le Paris Hall), Jemiah N. Blackshear, Levi-Jolah G.V. Blackshear, Zind Zhi Greene, great-grandson Marcellus B. Jerkins also a host of loving nieces and nephews.
