She had recently moved to Delaware, Ohio after living in Muscatine, Iowa for 50 years. A dedicated community member, Mrs. Carlson was regularly involved in church and social organizations, and she touched many lives over the years as a beloved teacher.
Jackie was born on January 4, 1930, to Vern and Mildred (Bills) Rowland. Growing up in and around Fayette, Iowa, she enjoyed exploring the local forest and neighborhoods with her older brother, Basil. After earning a teaching certificate from Upper Iowa University, she began teaching kindergarten at the West Union School District, where she met fellow teacher and future husband, Melvin “Mel” Carlson. Jackie Rowland and Mel Carlson were married on May 27, 1951. They were blessed with two children, Jan (Russell “Russ”) Anible, and Jon Carlson, both of Delaware, Ohio.

After moving to Muscatine in the summer of 1967, Jackie completed her bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa. She began a career of teaching at the Grant Elementary School in Muscatine. She was an active and loyal member of Faith United Church of Christ, contributing to the education and music departments. She attended the Atheneum Club, the Twentieth Century Club, and PEO Chapter MM-OE. She also was on the founding committee of the Muscatine Civic Chorale, and was a dedicated member until recent years.

Jackie is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother.  She is survived by her children and four grandchildren: Jennie (Andres “Choco”) Valdez of Dayton, Ohio; Sarah (Mark) Jackson of Fairborn, Ohio; Katherine “Katie” (Andrew) Modras-Anible of Dayton, Ohio; and John (Carolyn) Anible of Toledo, Ohio. She had five great-grandchildren: Erin, A.J., and Kristina Valdez; Olivia Jackson; and Shiloh Modras-Anible, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children. She was immensely proud of all of her family. She leaves behind a legacy of joy, love, beauty, faith, and wisdom. She will be deeply missed and her memory will be cherished by all.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:30 pm on Saturday, October 7th at Faith United Church of Christ. All those who knew her are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to Faith United Church of Christ, 3307 Mulberry Avenue, Muscatine, Iowa 52761.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff and medical personnel of the Riverside Medical Center for their support and comfort in her final days.
