Marty Downs


Marty Downs, age 49, passed away on July 19th in Pickerington, Ohio, where he lived with his wife, Melissa. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, July 3, 1970 and lived in the area until leaving for collage. After attending Ohio State University and graduating from the University of Cincinnati, he moved to the Columbus area, permanently. He worked as a Senior Network Engineer of Information Technology for the Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, lived on a small hobby farm and helped rehabilitate wildlife and rescue animals.
Marty is survived by his wife, Melissa Sparks; Parents, Tom and Anne Downs; Sister, Liz Steele (Dan); Brother, Darren (Marlene); Nephews, Cameron and Jared Downs and Niece, Catherine Steele; Aunts, Patricia (Gary) Shaffer, Kathie Pawlecki, Jean (Phil) Ramsey and Sue (Bruce) Peterson, many cousins and close friends and family. Preceding him in death were Grandparents Tom and Dorothy Downs and Homer and Margaret Brown; Aunt Judy (Fred) Morgan and Uncle Thomas Pawlecki. Marty’s family and close friends gathered in Columbus on Tuesday, July 23rd to celebrate his life and share fond memories. He will be loved and remembered for his kind spirit, sense of humor, love of animals, his enthusiasm for history, geography and music. He enjoyed family gatherings and trips of canoeing, kayaking and camping. He particularly loved weekend outings at car and motorcycle races with his Dad, brother Darren, nephews Cameron and Jared and family friend, Ed Foley. He will be cherished and deeply missed by all who knew him. Memorial contributions in Marty’s name may be made to his favorite charities or local animal rescues:
