Opal L. Hilliker

Opal L. Hilliker, age 53, of Columbus, OH passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Mount Carmel East Hospital following an extended illness. The daughter of Delores (Stephens) Curtis, she was born on May 22, 1968 in Mansfield, OH. On February 14, 1988 she married John P. Hilliker at the Columbus Court House and together they shared 33 years.

She is survived by her husband, John Hilliker; daughters, Krystal Hilliker and Angyle Hilliker; sister, Tammy Keckler; brother, David Bowser; mother-in-law, Laraine Hilliker; son-in-law/grandkids, Casey, Harley and Makenzie Tallant;ย best friend & sister-in-law, Margaret and Jim Hilliker; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Opal was preceded in passing by her mother, Delores (Stephens) Curtis; son, Mark Shonkwiler; father-in-law, James Hilliker; and son/dog, Rocky Jada Hilliker.

Opal worked at Ohio State University Medical Center, Goodwill, Ohio Thrift and Bilo Grocery in Conway, SC. She loved to cruise, take pictures, scrapbook, and make quilts. Opal enjoyed thrift store shopping to make unique things and enjoyed caring for others. She loved everybody with all of her heart, everyone had a special place.

She was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 14, but she never let that stop her from living life to the fullest. Opal was selfless and always put her friends and families needs before her own. When she got really sick and lost both of her legs, she still worried about everyone else and pushed herself to get stronger.

“Perhaps you sent a lovely card, or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent those beautiful flowers, that we saw sitting there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words, as any friend could say. Perhaps you were not there at all, just thought of us that day. whatever you did to console our hearts we thank you so much for whatever part.”

Best friend since 3rd grade always wanted to be sisters.I married my soul mate in 1988 she married his brother and we legally became sisters that we told people we were for years. She was always known as my “butt plug” because she was always by my side.As sisters do we fought thru the years and didn’t talk for months at a time because both her and I are both strong headed but one thing never changed is the love we had for each other. She always wanted to be like me but in reality shes the tough one.Lossing the man that raised (Mr.Ed), her mom,and even bearing her only son, Markie, losing her eyesight and both legs, and arms were about to be amputated she never worried about herself but how others felt or was doing.Damn CORONA left her alone at the end of her journey but the memories we made with this lady will last a lifetime. I will always love her to the last breath I breathe.I will carry around and share with as many people who want to listen and tell the ones that don’t ill tell anyway all about her….Till we meet again…watch over us all your sister foverever MARGARET
