Susan “Susie” Jones

Susan “Susie” Jones, age 85, of Columbus, OH, passed away January 7, 2019 after a brief battle with cancer. She was born on November 5, 1933 in Litchfield, IL to the late James Bonnet and Anne Bonnet. She graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1955, where she met the love of her life, Richard, whom she affectionately called “Jonesy.”  They married a year later, on August 18th, 1956 in Euclid, OH. She was a physical education teacher for many years, putting that career on hold to raise her family first in Euclid, then Massillon, and finally Columbus where she and Richard put down their final roots. She resumed her teaching career in 1979, later getting a credential in Special Education. Susan was an avid fan of The Four Freshman and The Ohio State Buckeyes.  She and Richard were members of The Four Freshman Society and The Buckeye Boosters, and they traveled to many conventions and Buckeye football games.  She was also a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Clintonville. Susan shared Richard’s love of harness racing and they enjoyed attending The Little Brown Jug, which became a yearly tradition for the two.   She also loved working Jumble and Word Search puzzles to keep her mind sharp and recently took up learning to crochet. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter, Laura Jones-Ball (Jonathan Ball); son, Steven Jones (Elizabeth Hoffmann); and grandchildren, James, Rhys, and Darin. She is preceded in death by her beloved Richard, their son David, brother Dr. John Bonnet, and sister Patricia Nissen. The family would like to express appreciation for the staff at Mayfair Village for providing a caring, loving, and safe environment and for the staff at Ohio Health Hospice and Kobacker House for the exceptional care she received. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, January 18th at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 35 East Stanton Ave. Columbus, OH 43214 where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of service. A small luncheon will take place immediately following. • Jan and Doug Snyder says:

We knew your parents for many years. Doug drives and trains horses at The Meadows in Pennsylvania and I lived in Columbus before I married Doug. We both thought the world of both of them. So sorry to hear about Susie. Our condolences to your family.

  • Jon & Elaine Grundtisch says:

We met Dick and Susie on one of the Buckeye Booster trips. They seem to realize that we were on our first trip and asked us to join them at dinner one evening. It was love at first sight for my husband and me. They introduced us to Norm and Carol Roessing and other friends. We quickly became friends and invited them to our home town of Upper Sandusky each December for dinner, a trip to a Fantasy of Lights display at our local park and dessert at our home. Susie texted us every time the Buckeyes were playing. Susie was unable to come to Upper last year, but we called her and each one of us talked with her for awhile. We already miss both she and Dick. Our sympathy to the family.

Laura & Steve: First, I just learned about your mom, and for that I apologize! I’m certain you know how important Susie and Dick were to me. They always gave me countless hours of support, regardless of the personal scenario I was presenting them! What GREAT people! They’ll always remain in my heart! We enjoyed a ton of fun with the horses. Blacktiebash presented us many highlights. Each year I anxiously awaited Dick’s review of all the upcoming recruits to OSU football. He emulated What a writer he became! Your mom? No one better in her expertise in education. I am sooooo sad to learn about your mom’s passing. I’ll always keep both Susie and Dick close to my heart! I’ll always smile when thinking about the Jones family and the affect they had on me. God Bless!
